TCAUW action for Domestic Violence Law
Turkish Cypriot Association of University Women (TCAUW) informed the Board of University Women of Europe about some of their recent activities.
Two of the most significant events are inter-related as follows:
Firstly, TCAUW organised and hosted a zoom conference on ‘Women and Laws’, approximately 60 women from Cyprus and other countries attended. The conference was held in Turkish and the invited speakers were 3 activists and lawyers from Cyprus and Turkey.
Secondly, they have written a statement on ‘Domestic Violence Law in TRNC (Turkish Cyprus)’ addressing each one of the 50 Members of the Parliament and with the support of 23 associations and organisations. A group of women representing their respective organisations went to the Parliament Building on May 3rd to read the letter in the presence of local media.
In the letter it was stated:
“….As the signatory associations and organizations below, and within the framework of your duty to represent all segments of our society;
we are hereby asking you to pass the Domestic Violence Law in line with international and the EU laws in order to prevent violence against women and children in our country…
In addition, necessary legal arrangements should be made in cooperation with non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) for a more effective operation of the Women’s Unit….”

Thank you so much dear friends of TCAUW. I hope your initiative to get the Law against Domestic Violence passed in your country will be succesfull. May the day come that men will no more express their rage or will show their power through violence against women and children.
