We are pleased to invite you to the next Annual General Meeting of the University Women of Europe in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus. This year, the AGM will be combined with a one-day conference, the theme is: “Women and sustainable environment”.
Women play a key role in the management, conservation, exploitation and utilization of natural resources as consumers and educators, our focus will be on the issues and the impact of women arising from the current situation in Europe.
Why does sustainable development depend on women? How to build equal sustainable development?
We are looking forward to meeting you, exchanging ideas and continuing to be engaged in the work towards an improvement of women’s lives in Europe and all over the world.
The conference is open to all members of the University Women of Europe and their friends.
WELCOME TO KYRENIA
The Turkish Cypriot Association of University Women (TCAUW) is happy to host the UWE Annual General Meeting 2022. The city of Kyrenia is the hidden jewel of the Mediterranean full of magnificent historical monuments that provide timeless glimpses of glorious days gone by. The Kyrenia Harbour is a great example of the town’s rich history, with streets of old Kyrenia town exuding Ottoman architecture, leading up to the Venetian-built Kyrenia Castle beautifully towering over the harbour. The list continues with the breath-taking St. Hilarion Castle up on the mountain top and the Bellapais Abbey in set in one of the most beautiful villages on the island, as well as museums housing relics of the past.
TRANSPORTATION
Kyrenia city can be reached by individual or collective taxi services that can be organised by your hotel or that can be taken once you land at the two international airports (ERCAN and LARNACA) which have several daily flights to Cyprus. Ercan Airport can be accessed mainly by Turkish Airlines (https://www.turkishairlines.com/en-gb/flights/booking) regular flights from anywhere in the world as well as by some other charter companies such as Pegasus Airlines, Corendon Airlines with a touch down in Turkey. You can also have direct flights to Larnaca departing from many cities in Europe. (Easy Jet, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa Airlines, Ryan Air, Jet 2, Aegean Airlines LOT Polish Airlines etc.).

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
- Thursday 22 September: Arrival and registration, informal welcome and a cocktail reception
- Friday 23 September: Welcome notes, keynote speeches, lunch and workshops followed by a Turkish Cypriot festive dinner with traditional food
- Saturday 24 September: UWE Annual General Meeting, Gala Dinner in the evening.

The Acapulco Resort Convention Spa nearby the beach will serve as our conference location. This amazing 5*hotel is located on the east of the city. 20 minutes from Ercan airport, nearby the Kyrenia Castle and Bellapais Monastery. OPTIONAL TOUR
Sunday, 25 September: KYRENIA & NICOSIA Tour – 35 EUR (including transport & lunch)
After departing from the hotel we drive to the beautiful village of Bellapais where the ‘Bellapais Monastery’ is located. This monastery is one of the most amazing ones with its architecture and location. We walk to the house of ‘Laurence Durell’ who lived in this village and wrote his famous book called ‘The Bitter Lemons of Cyprus’. We’ll then drive to Kyrenia centre and visit the ‘Kyrenia Castle’ which is located by the marina. It was built by Byzantines and many additions were made by Lusignans, Venetians, Ottomans, and by English. ‘The Shipwreck Museum’ is located in the castle and must be visited. A shipwreck, amphoras, almonds, fig seeds and many other objects are been exhibited which all date back to 300BC. After a short walk in the marina we hop on our bus and drive to Nicosia.
We drive to the walled city of Nicosia which has been the capital of the island since 11th century. We’ll walk to the city centre from ‘Kyrenia Gate’ on foot. This gate is one of the 3 gates which surrounds the walled city of Nicosia. We stop at ‘Dr. Fazıl Kucuk Museum’ who was the Vice President of Cyprus when Republic of Cyprus was formed in 1960. We pass by ‘Samanbahce Houses’ which were the first social houses that were built for the people who were in need in 1900. We walk to ‘Venetian Column’ which is located in the centre of the city. ‘St. Sophia Cathedral’ (Selimiye Mosque) is one of the nicest gothic style buildings that was built by Lusignans. We walk to ‘Buyuk Han’ which was built in 1572 by the Ottomans and have our lunch in ‘Buyuk Han’. After some free time on our way to the bus we pass by ‘Dervish Pasa Mansion’ and visit the place which will be the last stop of the day.
CONFERENCE FEE
The conference fee includes conference registration and documents, all lunches, coffee/tea and the Turkish Cypriot festive dinner evening. Registration deadline: August 25. The optional tour will be paid separately. Non-members will pay 30 Euro’s extra for a year membership fee of University Women of Europe. If you would like to join us only for the gala dinner at a special location the fee is 35 Euro.
